Sociology and History: a necessary relationship in contemporary historiographical studies

This article analyzes the relationship between Sociology and History in contemporary historiographical studies, emphasizing its essential role in understanding long-term social processes. It begins by identifying a historiographical gap linked to the persistent disciplinary separation between both fields, which has limited the explanatory capacity of complex social phenomena. Through a critical review of classical and contemporary literature, the study examines contributions from historical sociology, collective memory studies, and Latin American perspectives that have sought to overcome this fragmentation. The analysis shows that integrating Sociology and History allows for the articulation of structure and temporality, providing broader interpretative frameworks for studying state formation, collective identities, social stratification, and processes of historical change. It also highlights that recent interdisciplinary approaches enhance the understanding of social complexity through comparative and longitudinal methodologies. Finally, the article argues that historical sociology constitutes a key field for renewing contemporary historiographical studies by enabling an integrated reading of past and present.
